Day 6 - Inverarnan to Arrochar & Tarbet, 28.1 km, 2880m ascent

The route reaches a climax in the Arrochar Alps, and in the Cobbler in particular. These steep-sided hills are familiar with the Glaswegian native, being easy of access and of considerable character. This route necessitates leaving the well-worn Munro paths, crossing the grain of the land involving very steep descents and subsequent asents. The distinctive summit block of the Cobbler is a fitting final summit before catching the train home.

The hustle and bustle of the Beinn Ghlas camp site is soon left behind with a rough but pretty ascent of the North bank of the Allt Arnan. A big track is joined, then left, for the heathery ascent of Beinn Damhain, a little known hill that stands in isolation between more illustrious neighbours.  Descend rough ground toward the impending bulk of Ben Vorlich. Head for the right of the wall and keep going until the upper ridge is gained.  A path emerges as you follow the ridge to the summit.

Above the clouds on Ben Vorlich

Unfortunately, the good path is abandonned at the 800m contour to drop steeply to the Loch Sloy dam. Cross the dam and slant upwards to the right, before headin up for the summit of Ben Vane. This requires heads down graft, once more meeting the main Munro path at the top.  Do not join this, but descend toward the stream to the West of Ben Vane and follow the left bank of this before cutting back West to the col with Ben Ime. Climb the trackless ground to Glas Bhealach, tbefoe mounting scree and grass to the group's highest summit.

From there its obvious - follow the main track to the col with Ben Narnain and continue to The Cobbler. The true summit is the rocky block.  This can reached with surprisng ease by going through a gap in the rock to a ledge on its right side. FGo along the ledge then up to reach the top. Be awre that you have to descend the same way.

A rocky path descends the corrie before the North Peak. This joins the main track furtrher down and this is followed all the way to the sea.  Either pick up the Three Lochs Way in Arrochar or else follow the road to arrive at Arrochar & Tarbet station where the West Highland Line will take you back to Glasgow and onward.
